antike Hafenstadt rd. 70 km westlich von Tripolis, Libyen, heute Ruinenstätte (UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe). Die von Phönikern in der 1. Hälfte des 1. Jahrtausends v. Chr. gegründete Stadt war eine der drei Städte der afrikanischen Tripolis (»Dreistadt«, Tripolitanien, Geschichte), seit dem 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. römische Kolonie; in der Mitte des 3. Jahrhunderts wurde es Bischofssitz. Sabratha kam im 5. Jahrhundert unter wandalische, im 6. Jahrhundert unter byzantinische Herrschaft und wurde bei der Einnahme durch die Araber (Mitte 7. Jahrhundert) zerstört. - Zu den römischen Bauresten gehören v. a. ein vorzüglich erhaltenes Theater (um 200 n. Chr.; Bühnenfassade wieder aufgebaut), das Forum mit Curia, Basilika und Tempel der Kapitolinischen Trias, Thermen, weitere Tempel (u. a. Antoninustempel) und ein Amphitheater; römische und byzantinische Befestigungsreste; die Mauer Justinians I. umgab nur das eigentliche Stadtzentrum. Eine frühchristliche Basilika wurde in die römische Gerichtsbasilika eingebaut (5. Jahrhundert n. Chr.), die justinianische Basilika entstand direkt am Meer mit prachtvoller Ausstattung (Bodenmosaik im Museum von Sabratha). Numidisches Pfeilergrabmal (2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.).
